History of BallenIsles
The property’s history dates to 1963, when Florida developer John D. MacArthur and the PGA of America worked with golf-course architects Dick Wilson and Joe Lee to create a championship golf facility. At the time, the property was known as PGA National Golf Club. During its early years, it hosted major golf events, including the PGA Championship and PGA Seniors Championship, and served as a home for the PGA of America.
Following the end of the MacArthur/PGA of America agreement in 1973, the club became JDM Country Club. In 1988, the property and golf courses were sold by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and renamed BallenIsles Country Club. A larger plan for a private residential country club community followed, eventually creating the collection of neighborhoods found at BallenIsles today.
